welcome!
Hello and welcome,
My name is Michael Graves and I've been using VOIP technology since 1997 when I lived in Toronto and my then fiance lived in Texas. We used a program from Vocaltech to make calls over the internet and save our money for more important things.
For the past eight years I've worked for a UK based company from my home office in Houston, TX. In this environment I've used various voip systems, including Asterisk, since late in 2003. My focus has been towards an embedded systems approach to Asterisk servers, while trying to experiment with a broad range of VOIP end-points and accessories.
Anything I've learned about this stuff I've learned by doing it myself, asking members of the community, and reading everything I can. I'm happy to share my experience with others and continue my own learning process.
Michael

It took a couple of minutes for the utility of this to really sink in. [...]

As they so rightly point out, these are fairly over-the-top kinds of devices for most people. But remember that nothing succeeds like excess!
The real question in my mind is about [...]
Of all the things discussed at Pulver’s HDComms event in May the one thing that spurred everyone to agreement was the idea that wideband telephony needs much greater public visibility. To that end Mr Pulver proposed the formation of a trade group to be called HD Connect. This group would promote wideband telephony in various [...]
What with the gathering storm that is wideband telephony there’s a lot of rumbling about codecs going on at the moment. Such discussions usually include at least a couple of open source proponents wondering why Speex is not more widespread. It’s a very good question.
Speex most commonly shows up in soft phones. That’s nice, but [...]
Earlier today Michael White at E4 tweeted that he had just received his shipment of Gigaset SL78H handsets. The SL78H is the high-end handset that Gigaset is offering as an optional addition to the A580IP and S675IP basic SIP/DECT systems. I’ll be going into detail about it eventually, but not until after I’ve reviewed the two [...]
